Safety

The Seltos X-Line SX offers an optional 360 degree parking monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Corolla Cross only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Seltos and the Corolla Cross have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Seltos comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Corolla Cross’ 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Kia’s powertrain warranty covers the Seltos 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Corolla Cross. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Corolla Cross ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia above average in initial quality. With 19 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

Engine

The Seltos X-Line SX’s standard 1.6 turbo 4-cylinder produces 21 more horsepower (190 vs. 169) and 44 lbs.-ft. more torque (195 vs. 151) than the Corolla Cross’ 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder.

As tested in Car and Driver the Seltos X-Line SX 1.6 turbo 4-cylinder is faster than the Toyota Corolla Cross:

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Kia Seltos higher (6 out of 10) than the Toyota Corolla Cross (5). This means the Seltos produces up to 6.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Corolla Cross every 15,000 miles.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Seltos X-Line SX’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Corolla Cross (235/45R19 vs. 225/55R18).

The Seltos X-Line SX’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Corolla Cross XLE’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Seltos X-Line SX has standard 19-inch wheels. The Corolla Cross’ largest wheels are only 18-inches.

Suspension and Handling

The Seltos has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Corolla Cross’ suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Seltos’ wheelbase is 2 inches longer than on the Corolla Cross (105.9 inches vs. 103.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Seltos is 1.3 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Corolla Cross.

Chassis

The front grille of the Seltos uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Seltos has 8.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Corolla Cross (103.4 vs. 94.9).

The Seltos has 1.9 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front hip room, 3.8 inches more front shoulder room, 7 inches more rear legroom, 10.2 inches more rear hip room and 3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Corolla Cross.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Seltos’ rear seats recline. The Corolla Cross’ rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Seltos has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Corolla Cross with its rear seat up (27.8 vs. 21.5 cubic feet). The Seltos has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Corolla Cross with its rear seat folded (64.2 vs. 46.9 cubic feet).

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Seltos’ liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Payload and Towing

Standard on the Seltos uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Seltos has a higher standard payload capacity than the Corolla Cross (1223 vs. 1160 lbs.).

The Seltos has a higher maximum payload capacity than the Corolla Cross (1224 vs. 1175 lbs.).

Ergonomics

When two different drivers share the Seltos X-Line SX, the optional memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Seltos X-Line SX’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Seltos has a standard Smart Key that allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, unlock the cargo door, and start the engine, all without removing the key from pocket or purse. Only the Corolla Cross LE/XLE offers a Smart Key System.

The Seltos’ driver power window, power lock and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Corolla Cross’ power window (except driver window) and power lock switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Seltos’ variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The Corolla Cross L’s standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

When the Seltos X-Line SX with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Corolla Cross’ mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Seltos X-Line SX keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Corolla Cross doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
