Safety

The Seltos X-Line SX offers an optional 360 degree parking monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Corolla Cross Hybrid only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Seltos and the Corolla Cross Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The Seltos comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Kia’s powertrain warranty covers the Seltos 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Corolla Cross Hybrid. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Corolla Cross Hybrid ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia above average in initial quality. With 19 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

Engine

The Seltos X-Line SX’s standard 1.6 turbo 4-cylinder produces 43 lbs.-ft. more torque (195 vs. 152) than the Corolla Cross Hybrid’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Seltos has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Corolla Cross Hybrid (13.2 vs. 10.6 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Seltos X-Line SX’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Corolla Cross Hybrid (235/45R19 vs. 225/55R18).

The Seltos X-Line SX’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Corolla Cross Hybrid XSE’s 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Seltos X-Line SX has standard 19-inch wheels. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

The Seltos offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Corolla Cross Hybrid; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Seltos has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Seltos’ wheelbase is 2 inches longer than on the Corolla Cross Hybrid (105.9 inches vs. 103.9 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Seltos is 1.4 inches wider in the front and 1.8 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

For greater off-road capability the Seltos X-Line SX has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Corolla Cross Hybrid (8.1 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Seltos to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Kia Seltos may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 200 pounds less than the Toyota Corolla Cross Hybrid.

The front grille of the Seltos uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Seltos has 8.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Corolla Cross Hybrid (103.4 vs. 94.9).

The Seltos has 1.9 inches more front headroom, 2.5 inches more front hip room, 3.8 inches more front shoulder room, 7 inches more rear legroom, 10.2 inches more rear hip room and 3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Corolla Cross Hybrid.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Seltos’ rear seats recline. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Seltos has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Corolla Cross Hybrid with its rear seat up (27.8 vs. 17 cubic feet). The Seltos has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Corolla Cross Hybrid with its rear seat folded (64.2 vs. 55 cubic feet).

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Seltos’ liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Payload and Towing

Standard on the Seltos uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Seltos has a higher standard payload capacity than the Corolla Cross Hybrid (1223 vs. 1170 lbs.).

Ergonomics

When two different drivers share the Seltos X-Line SX, the optional memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer a memory system.

The Seltos X-Line SX’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Seltos’ driver power window, power lock and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s power window (except driver window) and power lock switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.

The Seltos’ variable intermittent wipers have an adjustable delay to allow the driver to choose a setting that best clears the windshield during light rain or mist. The Corolla Cross Hybrid S’ standard fixed intermittent wipers only have one fixed delay setting, so the driver will have to manually switch them between slow and intermittent.

When the Seltos X-Line SX with available tilt-down mirrors is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Corolla Cross Hybrid’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Seltos X-Line SX keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in Summer. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

Model Availability

The Seltos is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Corolla Cross Hybrid doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
