Safety

The EV3 offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the EV3’s standard Downhill Brake Control allows you to creep down safely. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer Downhill Brake Control.

To help make backing out of a parking space safer, the EV3 has standard Rear Cross-Traffic Collision Warning with Rear Cross-Traffic Collision-Avoidance Assist, systems which detect vehicles approaching from the sides and can automatically apply the brakes to prevent a collision. Parking Support Brake costs extra on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid.

Both the EV3 and the Prius Plug-In Hybrid have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

Warranty

The EV3 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Kia’s powertrain warranty covers the EV3 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Prius Plug-In Hybrid. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia above average in initial quality. With 19 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

Engine

The EV3’s optional electric motors produces 41 more horsepower (261 vs. 220) than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The EV3 GT’s standard electric motors produces 68 more horsepower (288 vs. 220) than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s 2.0 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

Environmental Friendliness

In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Kia EV3 higher (10 out of 10) than the Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid (6). This means the EV3 produces up to 12.9 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid every 15,000 miles.

Transmission

The EV3 GT’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer launch control.

For better traction, the EV3 has larger standard tires than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (215/60R17 vs. 195/60R17). The EV3 GT-Line/GT’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (235/45R19 vs. 195/60R17).

The EV3 GT-Line/GT’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE/Nightshade’s 50 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the EV3 is 1.9 inches wider in the front and 1 inch wider in the rear than the track on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid.

For better maneuverability, the EV3’s turning circle is .4 feet tighter than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid SE’s (34 feet vs. 34.4 feet). The EV3’s turning circle is 1.4 feet tighter than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE/Nightshade’s (34 feet vs. 35.4 feet).

The design of the Kia EV3 amounts to more than styling. The EV3 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .275 Cd. That is lower than the Prius Plug-In Hybrid (.27 to .29) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the EV3 get better fuel mileage.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the EV3’s rear seats recline. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the EV3 Land/GT-Line/GT’s liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Towing

The EV3 has a 1500 lbs. towing capacity. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid has no towing capacity.

Servicing Ease

The EV3 uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

The EV3 GT has a standard heads-up display that projects speed, navigation instruction and driver assistance information readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The EV3’s standard Smart Key allows you to unlock the doors from either front door handle, open the cargo door, and start the vehicle, all without removing the key from pocket or purse. Smart Key System standard on the Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a sensor on the trunk or any door except the driver’s, so you’ll have to walk to the driver's door to touch the handle.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the EV3 has a standard rear wiper. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The EV3 has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid has an automatic headlight on/off feature standard only on the XSE/Nightshade.

When the EV3 Land/GT-Line/GT is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Kia EV3 and Toyota Prius Plug-In Hybrid offer exterior mirrors that can be folded to provide convenience. The EV3 offers available power folding mirrors, which allow for easy, one-touch folding or unfolding at the driver’s discretion. This provides added convenience when maneuvering or parking, as well as when walking past the parked vehicle. In comparison, the Prius Plug-In Hybrid’s foldable mirrors are manual, requiring the driver to get out and physically fold them once parked and unfold them before getting in.

Both the EV3 and the Prius Plug-In Hybrid offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the EV3 has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

The EV3 GT’s Smart Parking Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, starting, stopping and changing direction automatically. Remote Smart Parking Assist will park and retrieve your car remotely: press a button and watch it park itself. This is ideal for tight locations. The Prius Plug-In Hybrid XSE Premium’s automatic parking system does not offer parking by remote control.
