Safety

Both the Sorento Hybrid and Land Cruiser have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Sorento Hybrid has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Land Cruiser’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the Sorento Hybrid uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The Land Cruiser uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the Sorento Hybrid and the Land Cruiser have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available all-wheel drive and around view monitors.

Instrumented handling tests conducted by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and analysis of its dimensions indicate that the Sorento Hybrid, with its four-star roll-over rating, is 8.7% less likely to roll over than the Land Cruiser, which received a three-star rating.

The Kia Sorento Hybrid (built after September 2025) has achieved the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety’s (IIHS) highest rating of “Top Safety Pick Plus” for the 2026 model year. This distinction is based on its exceptional performance in IIHS’ rigorous battery of safety tests. Specifically, it earned a “Good” rating in the latest, more stringent moderate overlap front crash test, a “Good” result in the updated side impact test, a “Good” score in the revised pedestrian crash prevention test, and a “Good” score in the revised vehicle-to-vehicle crash prevention test. The Land Cruiser is not even a standard “Top Safety Pick” for 2026.

Warranty

The Sorento Hybrid comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Land Cruiser’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years or 24,000 miles sooner.

Kia’s powertrain warranty covers the Sorento Hybrid 5 years and 40,000 miles longer than Toyota covers the Land Cruiser. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the Land Cruiser ends after only 5 years or 60,000 miles.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Kia vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Kia above average in initial quality. With 19 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

Tires and Wheels

The Sorento Hybrid’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Land Cruiser 1958’s standard 70 series tires. The Sorento Hybrid’s tires are lower profile than the Land Cruiser’s optional 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Sorento Hybrid has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the Land Cruiser 1958.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Kia Sorento Hybrid has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Toyota Land Cruiser has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The Sorento Hybrid EX handles at .80 G’s, while the Land Cruiser pulls only .68 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Sorento Hybrid EX executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 2 seconds quicker than the Land Cruiser (27.7 seconds @ .62 average G’s vs. 29.7 seconds @ .55 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Sorento Hybrid’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the Land Cruiser’s (37.9 feet vs. 40 feet).

Chassis

The Kia Sorento Hybrid may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 900 to 1200 pounds less than the Toyota Land Cruiser.

The Sorento Hybrid is 6.8 inches shorter than the Land Cruiser, making the Sorento Hybrid easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Sorento Hybrid is 8.8 inches shorter in height than the Land Cruiser, making the Sorento Hybrid much easier to wash and garage and drive (lower center of gravity).

Unibody construction lowers the Sorento Hybrid’s center of gravity significantly without reducing ground clearance. This contributes to better on the road handling and better off-road performance and stability. In addition, unibody construction makes the chassis stiffer, improving handling and reducing squeaks and rattles. The Land Cruiser doesn’t use unibody construction, but a body-on-frame design.

Passenger Space

The Sorento Hybrid offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Land Cruiser can only carry 5.

The Sorento Hybrid has .2 inches more front headroom, .2 inches more front hip room, .6 inches more front shoulder room and 4 inches more rear legroom than the Land Cruiser.

The front step up height for the Sorento Hybrid is 4 inches lower than the Land Cruiser (19” vs. 23”). The Sorento Hybrid’s rear step up height is 5.5 inches lower than the Land Cruiser’s (19” vs. 24.5”).

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Sorento Hybrid easier. The Sorento Hybrid’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 31.7 inches, while the Land Cruiser’s liftover is 35.6 inches.

Pressing a button automatically lowers the Sorento Hybrid’s second row seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Sorento Hybrid’s liftgate can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Sorento Hybrid to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Kia Sorento Hybrid has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Only the Land Cruiser Standard offers wireless charging.

Model Availability

The Sorento Hybrid is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Land Cruiser doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
